To put it bluntly, Tenshi ni Narumon! is one of the oddest, most
original series I've ever seen. The amazingly catchy opening theme
Datte Daisuke drags you into the show and doesn't let go until the
closing theme. The show is riveting in it's bizarre, pl ayful
exhuberance. Absolutely gorgeous animation and character designs,
courtesy of Sunrise studios, complements the stunning background music
and a plot that takes so many weird twists and unexpected turns that
you have to keep watching just to see what 'll happen next.
It's hard not to love a show that's this happy. There's a general
feeling of love in the show; it's clear the creators had a deep
respect for the source material and brought it to life with enough
creativity to really show off the talent they had putting this
together.

It's hard to imagine this series getting picked up for US
distribution, due to it's utter strangeness.

Herein lies one of the
big problems with this show. The sheer strangeness of the proceedings
will really turn off a lot of fans. Some things are just too foreign
to appeal to a broader audience, and this show firmly establishes
itself as unconventional and weird. This is a real problem - this show
won't gain a lot of fans simply because it's too far out there and too
bizarre to really b e appreciated by an overseas audience.
Occasionally the show becomes flat out confusing and ends up turning
the audience off to it. Proof of this in action is that the fan base
for this show is still ridiculously small, despite a wide circulation
of fans ubs. I'm willing to bet that there won't be too many Noelle
costumes at AnimeExpo this year. Hopefully, the show will catch on,
and US anime fans will be treated to a glimpse at the fantastically
happy, utterly strange world of Tenshi ni Narumon!.

Well, here I go, where angels fear to tread.
I received FLCL 6 a week or so ago, but I waited a while to watch it until
the end of last week when I had a 3 hour span where I could watch the entire
series over again in order. Then last night I watched FLCL 6 again just to
clear up the images in my head. So now, as ready as I ever will be, here are
my "thoughts" on FLCL, including my take on "what it means".

First of all, for the generally curious folks who haven't seen this Gainax
series, "FLCL" is their most recent OAV series, created digitally, and
released on six region 2 DVD's over the past year or so. A number of notable
"extras" came with the DVD's, including posters, very nice brochures and
particularly interesting - well done English subtitles on disks 2 - 6. ( The
region 2 DVD's were released by Star Child, #'s KIBA 478 - 483. )
What's the series about? Well, on the surface, it's the story of Naota, a 12
year old who gets involved with Haruko, a very strange and hyper 19 year old
girl who claims to be an alien. Along the way Naota gets smashed on the head
several times, and from the bump on his head come out various huge alien
robots. Naota also has to deal with a number of other aliens who may or may
not be trying to stop a huge flatiron-shaped building run by a mysterious
organization called Medical Mechanica from destroying the world, Naota's
older brother's girlfriend Mamimi, who almost casually hits on Naota, a girl
classmate named Eri who teases him in a somewhat seductive manner, more
